Technology plays a central role in boosting the city's income. Cambridge companies are leaders in hi-tech niches such as wireless technology, sensors, semiconductors, mobile telecommunications, display technology and instrumentation. Cambridge also plays host to one of the most important biotechnology clusters in Europe, as well as organisations leading the way in areas like agriculture biotechnology, and drug discovery and development.

Another important part of Cambridge's economy is education. It currently accounts for around 7% of the overall GVA from the city, contributing a total of £319 million during the fourth quarter of 2015. Other significant industries in Cambridge include food, high-value manufacturing and low carbon environmental goods and services (LCEGS).
