One industry that has become increasingly important to Newport in recent times is tourism. 4.78 million visitors came to the city during 2016, an impressive increase of over 57% from the year before. The amount of day visitors grew by nearly 75%, reaching a total of four million, while overnight stays increased to 730,000.
The most recent figures from the STEAM survey revealed that the tourism industry generated £373.59 million for the city's economy in 2016, an increase of 19.4%. This also lead to an increase of 23.3% in the number of jobs currently being supported by the industry, reaching a total of 4,102.
