There are currently more than 7,400 enterprises across the city of Southampton, providing jobs for 127,000 people. The number of businesses grew by an impressive 9.7% between 2015 and 2016. The growth rate of micro businesses (0-9 employees) has been particularly strong, increasing by 30% from 2010 to 2016.

Southampton is an important retail hub for the south coast region, as well as a renowned centre for cruises - 1.5 million people enjoying cruises visit every year. Public administration, education and health is the sector with the most growth, at £348 million since 2010. This is followed by transport, distribution, accommodation and food at £320 million, and professional services at £109 million.
