As is clearly demonstrated in the list above, York enjoys business success across a range of different sectors. Creative and digital is one of the fastest-growing industries in the city, having been given UNESCO City of Media Arts status, alongside just six other cities worldwide. The sector has seen £100 million worth of investment, including 200,000 sq ft studio space at the edge of the city.

York is also an important centre for the rail industry, accounting for 10% of all employment in the sector nationally and playing host to the headquarters for Network Rail. Insurance is becoming another lucrative sector for the city, now accounting for 4.5% of its GVA - four times more than the UK average.
