In contrast to expectations from some, Brexit has actually given a boost to the manufacturing industry in Derby. The reduced value of the pound has meant that companies in the sector, including market leaders such as Toyota and Rolls Royce, are benefiting and helping to fuel the city's economy; in Summer 2017 it was the third fast-growing in the country.
Research and development is also important for Derby's economy. In 2015 alone £1.5 billion was spent on R&D in the private sector, the majority of which went on manufacturing. The government is also investing heavily in the sector; £4.7 billion has been set aside for R&D to 2021.
