Top Human health and social work activities companies in UK by revenue

The health and social care industry represents one of the largest sectors in the UK. Indeed, it accounts for 9.8% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). In 2016, total expenditure on healthcare sat at a monumental £191.7 billion - an increase of 3.6% from the previous year. The vast majority of this expenditure came from the government, accounting for £152.2 billion, or 79.4%.
Long-term care is another of the largest sectors within the UK. Expenditure topped £35.5 billion in 2016, with the addition of the £10.9 billion that was spent on social care activities that exist outside of the health accounts definitions. Again, the government was the biggest financier here, having paid for 62% of this.

The industry also remains one of the largest employers in the country, with 1.4 million people working for the NHS alone, and 1.6 million involved in the social care sector. It's worth mentioning here the challenge that Brexit will pose in terms of attracting and retaining EU staff; the Department of Health predicts a potential shortage of up to 42,000 nurses by 2025.
