Top Wholesale and retail trade companies in UK by revenue

The retail industry is undoubtedly one of the most crucial to the UK economy. In 2017, retail accounted for 11% of Gross Value Added, having contributed £194 billion to the economy. This was an increase of £4 billion from the previous year. As of 2016, there were 4.9 million people (20.5% of the UK population) employed in the industry, across 374,000 businesses.
Shoppers spent £406 billion on purchases alone during 2017. For every £1 spent in the sector, £0.42 was spent in non-food stores, £0.39 was spent in food stores, £0.10 was spent on fuel for vehicles, and the rest went on other forms of retail including markets and mail order businesses.

The wholesale sector in particular is worth £30 billion a year to the UK economy. The grocery and foodservice wholesaling market value reached £29.9 million in 2016, a small increase from the previous year. The strongest segment was that of delivered foodservice operators, enjoying an increase of 2.1%.
